Ronda Rousey has just four fights in her MMA career, and not one has lasted over a minute. But that record has reportedly earned her a title shot. She is expected to take on Strikeforce bantamweight champ Miesha Tate at a Strikeforce event in early March.
After Rousey submitted Julia Budd in November, she asked for the fight with Tate. The two sparred over Twitter and during a fascinating interview with MMA Fighting. Tate believed Rousey was trying to talk her way into a title fight.
Now, that's what she has done, but she's hardly the first fighter to talk her way into a title shot, or who has earned it after a short record. Brock Lesnar was 2-1 when he beat Randy Couture for the UFC heavyweight title. Mo Lawal pestered the Strikeforce brass for a title shot, and he got it in his seventh pro bout.
What those two men and Rousey have in common is an extensive competitive background before MMA. Lesnar played pro football, was a pro wrestler and a decorated collegiate wrestler. Lawal wrestled at the international level before stepping in the cage. Rousey is an Olympic medalist in judo.
So yes, she has not yet proved that she can do anything but her trademark armbar, but so what? Tate will have a clear, definite path to show if Rousey belongs in the cage with her.

Brian Stann will look to get his career back on track when he meets heavy-handed Alessio Sakara at UFC on FUEL TV on April 14 in Stockholm, Sweden. News of the bout was first reported by MMANytt late Wednesday night, and later confirmed by Stann on Twitter. Stann (11-4) had his three-fight winning streak snapped when he lost via second-round submission to Chael Sonnen at UFC 136. The loss marked Stann's first as a middleweight since dropping down from light heavyweight in 2010. By the time Sakara (15-8, 1 NC) returns to action, it will be more than 13 months since he last fought inside the Octagon. The Italian-born Sakara lost a unanimous decision to Chris Weidman at UFC Live on Versus 3 last March and hasn't fought since. That loss also snapped a three-fight winning streak for the veteran "Legionarius." Also expected for the event, which will take place at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Sweden, is Papy Abedi vs. James Head, DaMarques Johnson vs. John Maguire, and according to MMAnytt, Magnus Cedenblad vs. Francis Carmont, Cyrille Diabate vs. Jorgen Kruth and Besam Yousef vs. Simeon Thoresen.
