UFC 140 picks, Vegas-style: Tito Ortiz looks for another sizable upset

UFC 140 picks, Vegas-style: Tito Ortiz looks for another sizable upset

Tito Ortiz shocked the world by saving his job at UFC 132.  The veteran fighter pulled the upset on Ryan Bader. He looks to do it again today against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. He has a much better shot time around because, for once, he's not facing another wrestling specialist.

Ortiz avoided the chopping block with the win over Bader and also impressed his bosses in a loss against Rashad Evans less than two months later. Over the course of six months Ortiz successfully altered the mentality of his boss Dana White.

"I actually called Tito and said 'It's over.' Tito begged me for a fight and he got that Bader fight and pulled it off," White said. "And in my opinion had an awesome fight with (Rashad) Evans. We'll see what he does Saturday night."

What "Lil' Nog" brings to the table in terms of takedown defense is anyone's guess. He was very solid in his fight against Phil Davis after a terrible fight against Jason Brilz.

Adam Hill from the Las Vegas-Review Journal joined me on ESPN1100/98.9 FM's "MMA Insiders" show to break down the card using the Las Vegas odds.

A big year for UFC closes with Snoop Dogg at Christmas party

A big year for UFC closes with Snoop Dogg at Christmas party

The UFC took its game to another level in 2011, so why not go over the top with a year-end celebration?

The long sought after network exposure arrived with the Fox deal, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that the fellas at Zuffa went big for a company Christmas party that included a Snoop Dogg performance at Red Rock Casino Resort. Here's some raw video from the performance (NSFW).

A jubilant Dana White, who is pictured with the Fertitta Brothers and Snoop, gave a big thanks to his staff.

It must've been a helluva party. White, who is seemingly on Twitter 20 hours a day, checked back in Monday afternoon.

Cris Cyborg Blows Out Hiroko Yamanaka to Defend Strikeforce Title

Filed under:

Returning to the cage after a year and a half away, Cris Cyborg absolutely destroyed Hiroko Yamanaka on Saturday night, needing just 16 seconds to win by technical knockout.

Cyborg exploded out of the gate and connected two quick hard right hands to knock Yamanaka down. Yamanaka got up but Cyborg exploded on her again, knocking her down against the cage. Cyborg began to pounce on the ground, but before she could do anything there the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.

"I'm very happy," Cyborg said afterward. "I trained hard for a year and a half. This is amazing. I love fighting, I love training, I want to fight more."

The win improves Cyborg's professional MMA record to 11-1 and shows once again that she's simply the toughest woman in the world. She's Strikeforce's women's featherweight champion, and the only question about her is whether Strikeforce will be able to find any opponents who can test her. After the fight Cyborg was asked about potentially fighting Ronda Rousey, which could be an option, although Rousey probably isn't ready for Cyborg.

Yamanaka came into the fight with a 12-1 record and a reputation as one of the best female fighters on the planet, but she's no Cyborg. There's no one like Cyborg.

Lesnar vs. Overeem still on! NSAC grills ?The Reem? over tardy drug test, but grants a conditional license

At the start of today's Nevada State Athletic Commission, it looked like another Las Vegas UFC main event might be headed towards the scrap heap. But after an hour of investigating and collecting info on Alistair Overeem, the commission granted him a conditional license to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 later this month.

The issue at hand was a missed random drug test requested by the NSAC on Nov. 17. Overeem's management was called in the morning about the test, the fighter then jumped on a flight from the U.S. to the Netherlands, and no response was given to the request for four days. Overeem explained that the time lapse was simply due to a communications breakdown.

Things got more complicated on Nov. 23 when Overeem went to his personal doctor in Amsterdam and the wrong type of test was administered. The commission asked for a urine test and received blood test results instead. Overeem submitted to the urine test on Dec. 7, but that again was done by his doctor.

After collecting the necessary info during the hearing and a short discussion, the commission decided to grant Overeem a conditional license.

He'll have to re-test in the next few days at a European location designated by the NSAC. He'll also have to submit another urine sample once he returns to the U.S. Following the fight, Overeem will be subjected to two more random tests in the U.S.

Overeem returned home on Nov. 17 because his mother experienced a health scare in her fight against cancer. Overeem bought that ticket on Nov. 15.

Plenty of media members reacted strongly to the conditional license describing the hearing as a farce. Overeem has long been subjected to rumors of steroid usage. A one-time light heavyweight, The 6-foot-5 Overeem has added incredible mass to his frame. He now weighs around 255 pounds.

Las Vegas is glad to hear that the fight is still on. The city's UFC cards in 2010 and 2011 have seemed cursed. Injuries have caused main events to go bye bye on several occasions.

UFC 108 was supposed to feature Anderson Silva-Vitor Belfort in the main event. UFC 109 was headlined by Randy Couture against Mark Coleman after several big fights fell through. UFC 130 lost Frank Edgar-Gray Maynard III due to injuries to both fighters. Most recently UFC 137 and UFC 143 lost Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz fights.

Strikeforce, Showtime Announce Extension to TV Deal

Executives from Strikeforce and Showtime have announced a new contract that will keep the two sides partnered up in the television broadcasting business for at least the next year. Their original deal had been set to expire in early 2012. The new pact will see Showtime broadcast up to eight Strikeforce shows per year. Undercard fights will also air live on Showtime Extreme.

The announcement ends lengthy speculation about the future of the relationship, which seemed unsalvageable as recently as October.

In a joint teleconference including the two sides, UFC president Dana White, who has had an active role in negotiations since mid-October, said the tide turned after a regime change at Showtime.

Asked if a deal could have been struck without the regime change, White said probably not.

"I dont know," he said. "Obviously, it didn't go well [previously]. It probably wouldn't have. Listen, let's cut the b-------. Me and [former Showtime sports boss] Ken Herschman aren't fans of each other. He's not a fan of mine, I'm not a fan of his. He's not there anymore. I flew out there, I liked these guys, and we did a deal, period, end of story."

Stephen Espinoza, who now runs the division as executive vice president & general manager of Showtime sports, would not divulge the length of the agreement between the sides, but promised to continue the long relationship between the brands in presenting Strikeforce as a first-tier product.

White echoed that, saying that Strikeforce would look to sign top available talent, and that fans shouldn't expect it to be run as a "B-league" or feeder system for the UFC, as some had feared.

"Let's be real clear: Strikeforce is not a secondary brand," Espinoza said. "Luke Rockhold is not a secondary fighter, Cris Cyborg is not a secondary fighter, GIna [Carano] is not a secondary fighter, Gilbert [Melendez] is not a secondary fighter. This is a top-tier organization. It was a top-tier organization as a brand when Scott [Coker] was running it independently of Zuffa, and it will continue to be now that they're in partnership with Zuffa."

Among the few changes announced is the eventual abandoning of the heavyweight division. World Grand Prix finalists Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett will meet in the final -- which is likely to take place before the end of the first quarter of 2012, according to Coker -- and then the winner will fight one more time in Strikeforce before the weight class is discontinued.

The reason? Lack of depth, according to White, who said the promotion will focus on all of its other existing divisions. He also reaffirmed that Strikeforce will continue to promote both the women's 135- and 145-pound classes.

For the first time, Showtime will also have a stake in the event preliminaries, as undercard fights will be aired live on Showtime Extreme.

The first event on 2012's Showtime-Strikeforce calendar will be on January 7, with an event from The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and featuring Rockhold defending his newly won middleweight title against Keith Jardine. The event presentation will look similar to past offerings, with White promising a few tweaks. The announcing team is likely to stay intact, Espinoza added.

The extra events will bring Zuffa's 2012 total to over 40 live shows, making White's schedule a nightmare. "People don't even think it's going to be humanly possible, but I disagree," he said of the travel that will be required of him. But that doesn't mean he's not excited for the potential of Strikeforce, and he plans to offer the UFC's sister promotion as much of himself as is possible in the coming months.

"This is what I love to do," White said. "This is the s--- that gets me out of bed in the morning. The Showtime guys and Scott Coker, everyone will laugh but it's business as usual for these guys. They've had this relationship for a long time. I'm getting involved in this thing and I'm excited about it. I'm going to get behind it 100 percent. Like I said, we're going to get in, we're going to do some fun stuff, make some tweaks and see how big we can make this thing."
